Utica First Insurance Company is currently seeking an Underwriting Consultant for our Oriskany, NY location.

Reports To: Vice Preside of Underwriting

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm (OT as necessary)

Provide expert-level file consultation, including coverage interpretation and rating guidance.

Primary technical authority on risks.

Identify and recommend solutions for underwriting exceptions, borderline risks, or referrals.

Assist in evaluating new products, endorsements, and coverage forms.

Develop, update, and maintain underwriting guidelines, appetite guides, and line-of-business playbooks.

Partner with leadership to ensure underwriting practices align with reinsurance treaties, regulatory requirements, and company risk appetite.

Conduct periodic guideline reviews to address market shifts, loss trends, and operational needs.

Primary resource for training and development of Underwriting staff.

Contribute to quality assurance efforts by identifying error trends, improving file quality and underwriting discipline, and recommending workflow enhancements.

Collaborate with Claims, Actuarial, and Product teams to address emerging risks, and support audits, regulatory matters, and broker communications with technical expertise.

Support underwriting leadership on projects.

Analyze data trends to help shape underwriting strategy and profitability actions.

Perform other duties as requested.

Position Qualifications:

5-10+ years of Commercial Lines underwriting experience.

Strong knowledge of property & casualty insurance principles, rating, and coverage forms.

Excellent analytical, judgment, and decision-making skills.

Strong written and verbal communication, including ability to teach and influence.

Professional designations (CPCU, AU, ARM, or equivalent) are preferred

Pay Range:

The actual amount to be offered to the successful candidate will be generally within the posted range but could differ dependent on the key aspects of each case which may include education, skills, experiences, location etc. as determined throughout the selection process.
