Senior Engineer


Under direction of the Engineering Department Manager, plans, directs, and performs engineering work related to the related to the design, construction, and maintenance of irrigation, domestic, and related facilities and miscellaneous project requests from other division/departments within the South San Joquin Irrigation District. Interacts with contractors, developers, consultants, engineers, and others to carry out the objectives of the Board of Directors.

distinguishing characteristics

Senior Engineer - This is the advanced professional level class in the Engineering series. Positions assigned to this classification are distinguished from the Associate Civil Engineer classification by the performance of more complex engineering assignments. In addition, positions assigned to this class have responsibility for all projects within their functional area as well as responsibility to provide technical and functional supervision to assigned personnel.

Associate Engineer - This is the professional level class in the Engineer series. Positions assigned to this classification are distinguished from the Assistant Engineer classification by having responsibility for major projects. In addition, the classification has responsibility for providing engineer's stamp and signature on drawings in conformance with government code and regulations.

Assistant Engineer - This is the entry-level class in the Engineer series. Assistant Engineers are assigned to work on projects under the guidance of experienced engineers. Positions in this class will usually perform most of the duties required of the Associate Civil Engineer but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent direction and judgement in matters related to work procedures and methods. The class is distinguished from the Associate Civil Engineer by the performance of more routine duties according to established procedures.

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.


  • Design and produce working drawings and specifications for the construction of related water and electrical structures as needed.
  • Prepare reports and recommend policies and practices to the Engineering Department Manager, General Manager, and the Board of Directors.
  • Represents the District at public meetings.
  • Prepare project RFP(s) and RFQ(s) and recommend selection of bids and consultants.
  • Coordinate the work of consultants and public and private construction of District facilities.
  • Review survey descriptions, parcel maps, and subdivision maps.
  • Assist in the preparation and monitoring of Engineer Department budgets.
  • Perform economic and feasibility studies.
  • Maintain effective communication and coordination of projects with the Engineer Department Manager and the General Manager.
  • Perform complex professional engineering work in the design, construction and maintenance of District irrigation and domestic facilities, including system modeling and planning, complex calculations, engineering studies, development of construction standards, material and equipment specifications, cost and scheduling estimates, and written reports and presentations.
  • Ensure compliance with District safety rules, policies and rules and regulations of outside agencies that apply to District operations.
  • Supervise and develop staff, and their work, assigned. Provide on-going feedback regarding work performance and conduct annual performance evaluations.
  • Manage engineering and related construction projects through their design and construction phases including project planning, scheduling, coordination, budgeting, and field inspection.
  • Assist in long-range capital improvement planning and budgeting, including performing inspections and preparing related studies.
  • Represent the District in the community and at professional meetings as required. This may include presenting information on behalf of the District and reporting to management.
  • Comply with and enforce all District rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Assists in the processing of structure permits and encroachment permits, quitclaims, and easement documents.
  • Prepare estimates of project costs for competitive bidding, budgetary purposes, and capital projects.
  • Assist in the planning and coordinating of ongoing maintenance programs.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned by supervisor.

Senior, Associate, and Assistant must have the ability to:

Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with both internal and external contacts; and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner so that you get along with customers, clients, co-workers, and management.

Technical and Analytical

Assistant Engineer must have the knowledge of Civil engineering principles and practices; and techniques for preparing designs, plans, specifications, estimates, reports, and recommendations related to the civil works of the District.

In addition to the Assistant Engineer requirements:

Senior and Associate Engineers must have the ability to perform technical engineering work of a complex nature.

Administration and Operations

Assistant Engineer must have the ability to effectively prioritize a fluctuating workload, work well under pressure and continuously meet deadlines.

In addition to the Assistant Engineer requirements:

Associate Engineer must have strong project management skills.

In addition to the Associate Engineer requirements:

Senior Engineer must have knowledge of principals and practices of organization, administration, budgeting, and personnel management. Must have the ability to supervise, train and evaluate staff; work independently, with a minimum of supervision and coordinate activities with other District personnel and with outside agencies.








Compensation details: 73.17-88.94 Hourly Wage
