Project Engineer

Overview:
The Project Engineer plays a pivotal role in supporting the successful execution of construction projects. This position involves working closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, Subcontractors, and clients to ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. The Project Engineer assists in project planning, coordination, communication, and contributing to the overall success and profitability of construction projects.

Responsibilities:

Construction Management:

  • Assist with department representatives, architects, engineers, and consultants to establish project requirements, specifications, and schedules.
  • Assist with the development and approval of architectural and engineering construction drawings.
  • Assist with construction and permitting processes.
  • Assist with solicitation, preparation, and review of bid documents.
  • Assist with negotiation and enforcement of contractual requirements, including general contractors, architects, and other direct service providers and vendors.
  • Assist with monitoring and maintaining the construction project schedule.
  • Assist with inspection of projects to ensure conformance with contract design specifications.
  • Assist with project planning, scheduling, and communication with development and owner for project timelines, milestones, and resource allocation plans.
  • Assist in project estimating, forecasts, and financial review of job cost reports.
  • Assist in project invoices, change orders, and purchase order management by tracking required due dates, analyzing unit pricing for accuracy and completeness.
  • Participate in project start-up meetings, subcontractor meetings, and progress meetings to review project scope, schedule, and deliverables.
  • Assist Project Managers in monitoring project costs, budget variances, and expenditures.

Field Operations: May be responsible for one or more of the following:

  • Assist with site quality control and audits to ensure workmanship and materials meet project specifications and quality standards.
  • Assist with project punch list development, documentation, and execution.
  • Assist with project staff with scheduling weekly/bi-weekly.
  • Assist with safety management, communication, and execution.
  • Assist in monitoring project compliance with superintendent for safety regulations, building codes, and contractual requirements.
  • Identify, report, and implement corrective actions for non-compliance, deficiencies, and safety hazards.

Project Coordination:

  • Keep plans and specifications updated by copying all bulletins, addendums, and inserting them in each Project Manager's Plans/Specs. Copy and distribute the same to all Field Superintendents and outside agents.
  • Insert Spec/Plan information in contract forms so contracts can be processed for jobs.
  • Track and follow-up on warranty/punch list procedure. Report to Project Managers and Owners regarding schedules of work and progress. Obtain desired results.
  • Assist in receiving and distributing documentation to support Operations and Maintenance Manuals for each construction project, including but not limited to mechanical turnover taping and as-builts plans.
  • Contract administration within Project Management software. Obtain working knowledge of software platform to assist in contract, submittal, and RFI management.
  • Maintain submittals, RFIs, change orders, and drawing logs within Project Management software. Trace receipt, review, and approval process for timely execution.
  • Prepare project status reports, meeting agendas, meeting minutes, and other project-related documentation for distribution within Project Management software.
  • Prepare monthly reports for Project Managers and distribute them to appropriate parties.

Special Projects, as assigned, such as:

Bid Coordination:

  • Assist with department representatives, architects, engineers, and consultants to establish project requirements, specifications, and schedules.
  • Assist with solicitation, preparation, and review of bid documents.
  • Update, organize, and maintain subcontractor and bidders list.
  • Utilize Pantera for bidding projects, notifications, updates, etc.
  • Upload documents, addendums, and notifications to bid software into Pantera.
  • Provide follow-up phone calls to all invited subcontractors on bidding projects.
  • Assist on bid day with collecting bids, coordinating phone calls, fax machines, etc.
  • Post bid follow-up internally to employees and externally to all subcontractors.

Estimating:

  • Gather, calculate, and compile data for use in conceptual/bid proposal estimates.
  • Provide takeoffs for estimating review of solicited and unsolicited bids. Ability to perform takeoffs with accuracy in Stack Estimating.
  • Provide analysis of subcontractor bids identifying completeness, risks, and recommendations for contracting.
  • Assist in acquiring internal bid support from staff up to and during bid day.
  • Prepare routine estimates under general supervision.
  • Maintain current, accurate information on processes from subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Provide administrative support in the estimating process.


Job Qualifications:

A. Necessary education or work experience:

  • Currently pursuing or have received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent 4-year college program preferred.
  • Experience in construction project engineering or related roles preferred.
  • Knowledge and understanding of construction practices, techniques, Title III of ADA, contract law, project controls, and building support systems.
  • Knowledge of construction safety regulations, building codes, and industry standards, helpful.
  • Proven record of providing excellent internal and external customer service.
  • Previous leadership experience.

B. Required knowledge and skills:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents as well as the ability to write effective documentation and correspondence.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts.
  • Ability to carry out detailed but unwritten or oral instructions.

C. Other qualifications:

  • Understanding of construction software (e.g., Procore, Primavera, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Office Suite), required.
  • Project assignments will/may require both in-office and on project site work, which will/may require travel, overnight lodging, or both as needed for project success.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule including weekends and nights along with extended hours some weeks, i.e., average 50-60-hour work weeks when traveling regionally.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, insurance, and reliable transportation.
