Mechanical Engineer with HVAC Controls experience to join our team. You'll combine mechanical expertise with building automation knowledge to deliver efficient, sustainable solutions, working closely with engineers, project managers, and contractors from design through commissioning.
Your Responsibilities Design and layout HVAC controls for a variety of mechanical systems including creating drawings for all aspects of the controls scope including panel design, instrumentation and control device selection, installation details, sequences of operation, startup, testing and commissioning procedures and plans.
- Apply engineering knowledge of all commercial HVAC equipment, ductwork, piping layout, system design, system layout, field investigation, and construction administration, to ensure control system designs and test plans are comprehensive and meet the project specifications and scope of work.
- Program electronic controller devices, server databases and Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI) to create an effective and operational control scheme that maintains the specified level of control tolerance while ensuring efficient and safe operation of the mechanical equipment.
- Create reports, historical profiles and trend logs for customer requirements.
- Performing site survey of existing system conditions to interface new designs with existing mechanical electrical and plumbing systems.
- Review of mechanical documents for proper coordination with all building control systems.
- Monitor the project construction activities from the control aspect to ensure compliance with plans and specifications. Activities may include but are not limited to, acting as resident engineer on projects, interpret plans and specifications and apply available information to satisfy all project design requirements.
- Maintain familiarity with appropriate engineering and construction codes and ensure compliance with all codes. Institute and direct changes to the work when required by differing site conditions. Conduct on-site investigation work to ensure compliance with design.
- Design software interfaces for equipment such as VFDs, CRACs, VRF controllers, chillers and boilers using BACnet or Modbus protocols as required to affect a completely integrated control system.
- Coordinate all controls project designs as needed to properly and efficiently connect to the base-wide facility control system.
- Troubleshoot control issues as well as ensuring the effectiveness of all graphic displays, schedules, trend logs, alarms, etc. .
- Diagnose complex control system issues when it is not easily determined where the problem lies (mechanical or controls)
- Assist with troubleshooting and diagnosis of issues of all control system elements whether hardware of software.
- Communicate effectively with other contractors and employees, customers, supervisors, and management.
- Supervise third party commissioning of controlled mechanical systems in new and renovated facilities.
- Train other less experienced controls staff and assists with any required customer training
What We're Looking For Education - Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field required.
- PE license preferred (or ability to obtain).
Experience - 3-7 years of mechanical engineering experience in HVAC and controls design.
- Experience with commercial, institutional, and industrial HVAC systems.
- Familiarity with HVAC control sequences and BAS integration.
Skills - Proficiency with Solidworks, AutoCAD, Revit MEP, or similar design tools.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC system design, psychrometrics, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics.
- Deep understanding of HVAC equipment operating principles and control methodology (chilled/hot water, DX, VRF, steam, boilers, VAV, modular systems).
- Knowledge of BAS protocols (BACnet, Modbus) and related controls hardware.
- Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills.

- Mechanical HVAC equipment and systems, and their design and operation.
- Use of Microsoft AutoDesk or Solidworks, Outlook, Word, and Excel applications software.
- Use of MS Teams, Project, and other project management software.
- Proper use of PPE and other safety equipment, and safety procedures and protocols.
- Read and interpret control wiring and other electrical diagrams/schematics.
- Modify control system sequences, including HMI graphics and database as required.
- Configure alarms, including notifications as well as reports, trends and historical data archiving per engineer requirements.
- Proficiently use computing equipment as needed to interact with a wide variety of control system components, back-up systems, cloud repositories, intranet and internet sites, online payroll systems, project management tools and other application software.
- Trouble shoot and diagnose communication and other control issues with various types of controls and communications devices.
- Ability to read and understand mechanical and electrical drawings.
- Ability to work efficiently, productively, and with minimal supervision.
