Position Title: Marine Electrical Engineer
Job Category: Engineering
Location Houston, Texas
Description: New Tech Global is seeking a Marine Electrical Engineering Lead for a client located in Houston, TX. This is a direct hire role.
This candidate should have a strong background in shipboard power systems and marine-classed electrical design to join our growing team developing commercial-scale OCCS systems. They will lead and support the engineering of electrical infrastructure required to power the OCCS system and integrate it within vessel platforms, with a focus on high-reliability, class-compliant, and safety-critical power architectures. This role requires a deep understanding of marine electrical systems, coordination with mechanical and process teams, and the ability to design, document, and plan for installation and commissioning in a dynamic, cross-functional environment.
Responsibilities:
- Design low and medium-voltage marine electrical power systems to support carbon capture equipment (motors, compressors, pumps, control systems).
- Develop one-line diagrams, load analyses, protection coordination studies, and grounding/bonding strategies compliant with marine class society rules (ABS, DNV, Lloyd's).
- Prepare marine-class-compliant design documentation including electrical load lists, cable schedules, wiring diagrams, interconnection diagrams, and equipment data sheets.
- Specify electrical equipment (e.g., switchboards, transformers, VFDs, MCCs, UPS systems) for marine environments and ensure compatibility with onboard generation capacity.
- Coordinate integration of carbon capture power demands with shipboard electrical distribution and propulsion systems.
- Perform cable sizing, voltage drop, and heat dissipation calculations for new equipment loads.
- Generate technical specifications, installation work packages, and vendor requirement documents.
- Support the development of Functional Design Specifications (FDS), Interface Control Documents (ICDs), and Control Philosophy for power system interfaces.
- Assist our Marine Certification team with class submittals and responses to surveyor comments.
- Develop pre-commissioning and commissioning plans for carbon capture electrical systems, including energization procedures and FAT/SAT protocols.
- Coordinate testing and verification requirements with shipyards, EPCs, and OEMs.
- Support sea trial preparation and post-commissioning troubleshooting of electrical system performance and safety interlocks.
- Team planning, recruiting, and managing a marine electrical engineering team. Mentor junior engineers and prioritize team tasks and goals in line with department and company goals.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Marine Engineering (Electrical).
- Minimum 7 years of experience in marine electrical engineering, preferably involving newbuild or retrofit projects for commercial ships or offshore vessels.
- Deep understanding of marine electrical distribution systems (LV and MV), including main switchboards, emergency power systems, and UPS systems.
- Familiarity with marine codes and standards (e.g., IEC 60092, IEEE 45, SOLAS, ABS, DNV, IMO).
- Proficient in power system modeling and analysis tools (ETAP, SKM, or similar).
- Experience with VFDs, motor starting systems, and harmonics analysis in shipboard environments.
- Strong working knowledge of insulation resistance monitoring, isolation transformers, and EMC/EMI compliance strategies.
- Comfortable with CAD tools (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, etc.) and project documentation platforms (e.g., SharePoint, Autodesk Vault, or similar).
- Excellent communication and coordination skills for working with cross-functional engineering teams, shipyards, and regulatory bodies.
Bonus Experience (Preferred but not required):
- Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or Marine Engineering (Electrical).
- Experience with power systems supporting process or chemical systems onboard vessels.
- Previous work on decarbonization technologies (e.g., carbon capture, exhaust gas cleaning, or alternative fuels).
- Familiarity with integration of marine automation and control systems (e.g., IAS, PLC-based control).
- 2+ years building and/or managing an engineering team.
