Full Time Hourly Rate: $18.63 - $30.52
Pay Scale/Grade: H4
Schedule: Monday through Friday and every other Saturday.
FLSA Classification: Non-exempt

Summary: The Landfill Equipment Operator II operates various types of heavy equipment in the performance of landfill operations. Performs inspections on equipment and addresses daily problems to ensure continuous operations of landfill and related work as assigned. Assists in overseeing performance and training of Solid Waste Technicians.
Essential Job Functions:
Equipment Operator
- Performs complex and difficult operations using one or more of the following: bulldozer, track loader, rubber tire loader, off road dump truck, hydraulic excavator, farm tractor, and other various types of heavy equipment.
- May operate other equipment such as a highway truck / tractor-trailer requiring a commercial driver's license.
- Trains other employees on heavy equipment with emphasis on difficult and/or complex operations to fully use equipment capabilities.
- May advise and direct the work of other personnel to ensure that landfill operations and permit requirements are maintained.
- Advise Landfill Supervisor on capabilities and best utilization of various types of heavy equipment.
Equipment Maintenance
- Prior to operating equipment, performs safety and maintenance inspections of assigned equipment.
- While equipment is being operated, continuously monitors gauge and other indicators for non-standard conditions.
- Performs light maintenance and servicing in connection with equipment operated.
- Notifies Landfill Supervisor of mechanical or safety problems.
- May assist repairman with mechanical repairs.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Required Skills, Abilities and Knowledge:
- Skills to communicate information to supervisors and co-workers; Skills to understand operator manuals, directives, procedures and instructions; Skills in basic math to use measuring instruments and to read equipment gauges; Skills to follow verbal instruction and counsel with crew members; ability to instruct and direct other employees; ability to maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public; ability to effectively communicate in a courteous manner; writing skills to clearly and neatly complete reports and forms; Substantial knowledge of practices applied in the use of a wide variety of heavy equipment for various maintenance and construction operations; skilled in the operation of heavy equipment to permit maximum utilization of equipment capability; skilled in operation of a wide variety of landfill equipment; Knowledge of safety rules, including accident causes and prevention.
Education and Experience:
- Five (5) years of experience working in landfill operations preferred.
- A valid Alabama Landfill Operator's Certification preferred.
- Considerable experience in operating various types of heavy equipment such as the following: bulldozer, track loader, rubber tire loader, off road dump truck, farm tractor, hydraulic excavator.
Special Requirements:
- Must possess a valid driver's license Class B CDL
- Willing to work overtime and weekends.
Physical Requirements:
- See well enough to read, write and safely operate assigned equipment.
- Hear well enough to respond to verbal communications.
- PPE is worn to minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses.
- Constantly using vision and hearing when reading monitors, being aware of surroundings and listening to equipment, traffic and alarms.
- Speak well enough to answer questions in a polite, courteous manner.
- Body mobility to perform maintenance and operate various types of equipment; Body movement of mobility to bend, move, stand, and lift.
- Use of hands and fingers to perform manual work.
- Occasionally lifting, carrying, pulling, or exerting 20-50 lbs., 10-25 lbs. frequently or up to 10 lbs. constantly.
- Frequently standing to complete daily tasks, sitting when driving and operating equipment, walking around inspection sites, carrying equipment and supplies, climbing onto equipment, and using foot controls to drive trucks and operate equipment.
- Occasionally kneeling or crouching when using a level and monitoring equipment, bending to connect parts or use tools, and balancing when mounting and dismounting heavy equipment; daily lifting shovels and other equipment, pushing/pulling equipment, reaching for of handling tools and supplies.
- Tasks are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as extreme heat or extreme cold, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
